PON Passive Optical Network Architecture

OLT — Optical Line Terminal

The OLT serves as the aggregation and control hub of the PON network, deployed in the carrier's central office (CO). It connects upstream to the IP metro or backbone network via uplink ports. JH Optoelectronic provides a comprehensive portfolio of OLT-side optical modules, including GPON OLT Class B+/C+/C++, XGS-PON OLT N1/N2/E1/E2 grades, and Combo PON (GPON+XGS-PON integrated) modules. These support up to 1:128 split ratios and 60 km extended reach, enabling carriers to achieve smooth multi-generational coexistence on a single fiber network.

ODN + ONU/ONT — Distribution & User Terminal

The ODN (Optical Distribution Network) consists of feeder fiber, passive optical splitters (PLC Splitter), and distribution fiber — entirely free of active electronics, dramatically reducing operational costs. ONUs/ONTs are deployed at customer premises. JH Optoelectronic provides GPON ONU, XGS-PON ONU Stick/SFP form-factor modules, and BOSA/Triplexer optical sub-assemblies supporting bridge, router, and gateway modes. For FTTR (Fiber to the Room) in-home networking, we also offer compact, embedded ONT module solutions.

FTTH — Fiber to the Home

For residential broadband subscribers, JH provides GPON/XGS-PON ONU optical modules and SFU/HGU terminals supporting gigabit/10G broadband, 4K/8K IPTV video, VoIP, and smart home services. Combo PON solutions enable seamless in-service upgrade from GPON to XGS-PON without ODN infrastructure changes.

FTTB/FTTdp — Fiber to the Building

For high-density multi-dwelling units (MDU) and apartment buildings, fiber reaches the building basement or hallway, with MDU-type ONUs or reverse-powered DPUs (Distribution Point Units) completing the last tens of meters over existing VDSL2/G.fast copper. A single MDU ONU serves 24-48 households, balancing coverage and investment efficiency.

FTTP/POL — Passive Optical LAN

Passive Optical LAN replaces traditional 3-tier Ethernet switching with PON technology for enterprise campuses, schools, hospitals, and hotels. ONUs are deployed directly in offices, classrooms, and wards. With zero active electronics in the distribution layer, TCO is reduced by over 40% and cabling space requirements drop by 80%.

5G xHaul — Fronthaul & Midhaul

Leveraging existing PON fiber infrastructure for 5G small cell and indoor distributed antenna system (DAS) fronthaul and midhaul transport, 25G/50G PON optical modules support eCPRI/ORAN interfaces.
